Today I tweeked my bicep. I know this because when I went to pick up my 25lbs. daughter I got a sharp pain in the muscle belly itself. This pain is the length of the muscle but does not effect the tendons or the joints(as far as I can tell). I went to lift tonight and got the pain again while unloading the bar. I went in the house and found an old compression sleeve and wore it for the workout >>> http://worldsstrongestscientist.blogspot.com >>>and the sleeve seemed to be tight enough to help. I did not complete the workout through the last lift, but I was just being cautious and leaving out some of the pulling motions. Has anyone ever had anything like this? I have never had a serious muscle injury and I am fearing the worst.

This is my first post although I have been around for some time. Powerlifted from '78 to '97. 4 IPF World Championship appearances - best was 2 fifth places, and 2 IPF Masters Worlds - a first and a second. I'm a little guy at 5' and 114 to 123lbs. All were done drug free, got frustrated in 1981 and gave in and started on a 3mg to 9mg Dianabol cycle. The cycle lasted 12 weeks, the diarrhoea lasted 6 weeks, recovery took 6 months - end of experiment.

Any problems raising your arm above shoulder height Lex? I'm thinking you may have rolled the bicep tendon out of it's groove in the front of your deltoid - I'm not a medical person, but this is one I have to watch.

Lex,
I have had my bicep torn and had surgery to fix it. It was torn where it attaches to the front deltoid. 75% detached. They cut it off, took off 3mm of frayed tendon and reattached it to an anchore.
With that said, no sleeve, etc. ever relieved the pain, like you describe that yours did.
However, my pain was in the front of the shoulder area, not in the belly of the bi.
When I would try to flip a tire, bad pain. Squatting(having my arms pulled back), bad pain. Stone or keg loading, bad pain.

I would take it easy for a week or two. Ice and ibuprofen too. If the pain continues, then I would get an MRI. This is the only sure way to know what is going on in there. I held off for a long time in doing the MRI and wished I hadn't as I could have had surgery sooner and sped up the process.

Good luck.

Really appreciate your response. I was thinking I may have strained it. It is sore today. The thing that pisses me off is that THIS WEEK is when I decided to compete this upcoming Highland Games season, and the bad bicep is on my throwing arm. I think I tweeked it doing single arm cleans training for WOB. I had forgot that I did that on Tuesday. We will see. Definately lots of IBPROFEN AND ICE...and some rest if I can manage it.

Thanks for the reply. No pain when lifting it over my head. Mostly I get a twinge of pain when I flex or pick up something...but not all the time.

Also I must mention that I too am completely drug free. Never touched the stuff and I am extremely afraid of needles.

Lex -

It sounds like you just need some good old fashioned rest. This past summer I tore my calf muscle just by walking while pulling a lawnmower. It felt like somebody stabbed me with an ice pick. The calf immediately got rock hard. Several days later I developed a very large, dark purple bruise on my shin along with some swelling. I went to my chiro who diagnosed it as a torn muscle. He used ultra sound and electro-stim. This helped a great deal. It only took two treatments, a week apart. It still took more time for the complete healing but I was able to get my grass cut once again.
