Interesting article in yesterday's New York Times (by Gretchen Reynolds) on endocannabinoids: Like It or Not, Our Brains are Enticing Us to Run.
Also one (by Anahad O'Connor) on screening high school athletes for heart trouble: Heart Risk In Athletes Is Gaining Attention

1) I don't think my brain has ever enticed me to run unless my butt was about to be kicked.
2) I think maybe one of the things that contributes to the deaths of many athletes, regardless of age, is the fact that athletes are so used to pushing themselves and "walking it off" that when they feel something that may be a warning sign they ignore it and push past the pain. Unfortunately, these guys (and girls) are too afraid to lose their spot on the team or lose the game. It's so ingrained in us to win at all costs and work harder than the other guys that losing is not an option. Apparently, death is.
