The question has been raised about whether or not a rule needs to be added requiring that Silver Bullet world record attempts take place in multiple-event contests.
Here are the CoC Silver Bullet rules:

Any thoughts on this?

I think single-event Silver Bullet contests should be allowed. Otherwise there ought to be an asterisk beside the "Silver Bullet World Record" title.
The asterisk would denote how many events the contest where the Silver Bullet World Record was set contested.
Then you'd have guys arguing over what exact events have to be in a contest to count as a real contest.
Then you'd have to put in place a rule that states "token attempts" in the other contest events is not allowed because it doesn't fall in line with the spirit of the challenge. That opens up the discussion of what exactly is a token attempt. I've seen a 400lb bencher take a 135lb squat (his squat PR was in the mid-500lb range and he was not injured) as a first attempt and skip his second and third squat attempts so that he can post a higher bench

Many thanks.
Do you know any of the background that led up to the idea that at least for some grip guys, they want at least some of the events to be in multi-event contests, for records to count?

The top 50 two hand pinch list used to have asterisks after records set in single event "contests" I think - not sure if they still do or not. Generally in grip contests grippers are first - pinch second and axle third - changing the order or having a single event contest gives a better chance for a good result if an event is a stand alone or earlier in the lineup - hands may not be quite as tired. There are no "rules" stating sequence etc and it has been done in different orders - it's just sort of the way things developed I guess. I like the asterisk idea OK - you still get credit for the lift but people know the particulars. If you have a 5 event contest as is common - the last event is certainly going to be done in a more fatigued state than the first one.
A contest needs to be defined also - two friends out in the garage probably doesn't cut it for me for example.

I would vote for single event being ok for the Silver Bullet because the crush event is always first, unless in TX.
For it to be taken as seriously as the 2HP, the gripper needs to be standardized. There's >50 pages of thread on gripper calibrations and variance but even small variations is like having a 100m world record where guys run between 98-101 m, depending on the track.

Check out the rules: http://www.ironmind.com/ironmind/opencms/Articles/2012/Feb/IronMind_CoC_Silver_Bullet_Rules.html
Where's the thread with >50 pages on "gripper calibrations and variance"? Did you mean the one that burst the balloon on "calibrations" and some other misstatements related to gripper ratings and accuracy?
Regardless, isn't 2HP kind of underpowered for a chainsaw?

Yes, I saw the rules, and even new grippers, opened on the spot, vary; some would say more than a first term president's policies.
As the for 50 thread: myths were slain, the light was brought, and expectations were generally exceeded as is generally the case when Daleileo becomes involved in Gripology. I look forward to the 3rd edition of the CoC book where you embrace calibration, make a catalogue pitch for a Vulcan racks modularized RGC, and beg forgiveness for your griperesy

. . . even new grippers, opened on the spot, vary; some would say more than a first term president's policies.
An absolute maybe and for some brands, you don't even have to open the package to see the variations, which is why you can't go after that record with your favorite generic, or a custom whatever. Good thing we eliminated that possibility, huh?

Congratulations on eliminating the possibility of anyone using anything other than a new IM gripper! Now we just need to address the problem of using grippers that vary like uncalibrated barbell plates for World Records. Meanwhile the 2HP has every facet standardized except the friction component (look for a grip contest in a hermetically sealed garage near you!).

Thanks, particularly, to Josh for getting the ball rolling, all sorts of good posts popped up on the 2HP—starting at the beginning for guys like me who thought it was a horsepower rating—so it seemed to warrant its own thread and we've just moved the 2hp-type posts from the end of this thread to their more natural home:

Ever since IronMind introduced the Silver Bullet and based the men's world record on using the benchmark CoC No. 3, questions have popped up about also including other CoC grippers.
One definite possibility is the CoC No. 2 and maybe reserving it for women:

Anyone have some thoughts on this?
Incidentally, Bill Piche and I have talked a little about the possibility of including the CoC No. 2 for men as well.

#2 for women - of course.
#2 for men. Sure - why not - it might be such a difference as to be much more of an endurance feat than a strength feat - it might be interesting viewed in that light? The same guys might or might not prove to be the stars given how long some people might have hold it - endurance is somewhat different than pure strength.
