I managed to visit the Gourock Highland Games on Sunday and was pleased to see a great effort by Gregor Edmunds who showed that even this early in the season he is in fine form.
I arrived as Gregor was taking his 2nd throw of the stone put (Kempoch Stone - lots of history with this stone) and his final throw which was even better cemented his lead in the Heavy Events Championship.
The 16lb shot was a closer contest however Gregor managed a throw of 16.34 m breaking the field record which has lasted since the mid 1960's.
The best of the day was a new world record in the 28lb weight for distance under the Scottish Athletics laws and rules. I didnt manage to record the distance but the throw was awesome.
Surprising was the stone lift competition (which was why I was there). Part of the competition, it involved lifting a 170 lb stone (shape and weight very similar to Deirdre's Teardrop) and transporting it some 18feet where it is thrown over a horizontal caber and the event is timed. All very interesting however however one athlete managed a DISTANCE of 6 inches as it was recorded and with the exception of Edmunds and two or three others I was disapointed with the overall standard of this event.
Time was pressing and I missed out on the remaining 2 events however the rest of the season does look good for Gregor.
