Every once in a while I will throw out my back while squatting. Before that happens it feels like my hip may not be tracking properly. I concentrate on a strong arch in my back and sitting back. I don't think form is the main problem. Are there assistance exercises recommended for protecting my lower back? Do I just need to do more ab work?

Thanks,

Karl

You may need to do more deep stabilizer work for your transverse abdominus and your multifidus group. Can you describe what happens when you "throw your back out"? Is it just sore? Does it affect your movements? Is it painful to walk? etc.

I'd just like to say that Andy helped me when I injured my back, he knows his stuff

Maybe squats are just not for you. Try pulling a heavy sled combined with heavy dumbbell deadlifts.

Is It your low back, or mid? If it's your low, I'd say your concentrating to much on keeping your arch. Just keep your butt out and chest up...squats will strengthen your low back on it's own, if you keep your butt out.

When my back goes out my hip will push out to one side or the other and walking, twisting and bending are all very painful. Andy, thanks for the advice. I will look into some exercises. It usually takes a few weeks for my back to loosen up enough to start doing any lifting again. Also, I will have to see my chiropractor.

My pelvis is a little crooked, so I have to be careful not to throw my back out as well. I'll find with a long set, that I'll end up leaning to one side too much- because of my pelvis... So get that checked when at the chiropractor.
