I was listening to the Mark and Brian radio show this morning (while working out in my garage) and they had a guy on the phone who was talking about some program aimed at making football safer—I don't remember the guy's name, but maybe this was something you're familiar with. They kept talking about head position on hits, but that was about the only specific thing I heard. Did you maybe catch this, too?

me - I ride a motorbike on weekends, I grow hot peppers, I play chess, I have pets, I don't have kids so I have my own Xbox

I'm not sure this topic will be overly popular but it might take some of the focus away from some of the ultra-serious topics on these boards. who knows, we may get to find out a little more about each other, find some common ground, maybe develop an understanding about what makes each other tick. maybe. :)

this would have to be the most commonly asked question I have seen asked about grippers.

this would have to be the most commonly asked question I have seen asked about grippers.

1RM/max load calculators have been around for sometime, offering a way to 'guesstimate' a weight/repetition based on another weight/repetition. a quick google search will reveal numerous calculators: Bryzicki's formula; Baechle's forumula, etc. in Beyond Brawn Stuart McRobert discusses the Maurice & Rydin method from the September 1992 issue of HARDGAINER. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1RM)

is there a way to define how many reps are required to progress from one gripper to another based on 1RM calculation? has anyone evidence that supports or discredits these calculations?

let's discuss.

from the IM store we have the following measures:
#1 = 140lb
#1.5 = 167.5lb
#2 = 195lb
#2.5 = 237.5lb
#3 = 280lb
#3.5 = 322.5lb
#4 = 365lb

based on the above numbers the three calculations/formulae mentioned above (Bryzicki, Baechle and Maurice & Rydin) give the following estimations to go make the progressions as follows:
#1 - #1.5 = 6-7 reps
#1.5 - #2 = 6 reps
#2 - #2.5 = 7 reps (M&R 8 reps Upper Body formulae used in these examples)
#2.5 - #3 = 6-7 reps
#3 - #3.5 = 5-6 reps
#3.5 - #4 = 5 reps

based on the 30-40lb increase between grippers and the mean average of 6 reps there may be some (mathematical) credence to using these calculators to approximate rep numbers. I do acknowledge that the organic variable (the human body) does not operate the same as a calculator due to leverage differences, strength and hydration on any given day, technique, ambient temperature etc etc etc.

personally, I have a current 1RM of 185kg in the trapbar deadlift achieved a few weeks ago. two nights ago I did 175kg x2 (this was done without prior reference to the calculators so my performance was not subconsciously influenced by them ie not a self-fulfilled prophecy). the Bryzicki and Baechle calculators indicate that my 1RM is 180-187kg based on 2 reps of 175kg. I find that interesting.

based on the gripper rep numbers above I will commence testing these results in my own training and see how I/they compare. I will have to check back through my log as I'm not sure what my max #2 reps are but I have closed a #2.5 CCS, alas #3 is still on the horizon.

I don't know what all this really means, if it means anything at all but I am very interested in hearing your thoughts and hope we can discuss this sensibly. bear in mind, I am not saying this stuff is accurate as I don't know enough about it to make such a claim. I just find it to be an interesting topic and hope you do too.

My Apollon's axle came in the mail recently and I was pondering a way to make the weights stay locked on the bar so they wouldn't rotate at all. I want to simulate the best way to make it just like the axle they use in strongman competitions like at the Arnold. I know I can put some strong collars on but that still might not be enough. I would do extensive modifications if I had to.

Arthur Saxon, probably the greatest strongman in history , was born into this world as Artur Hennig , on the 28th of April 1878 , in the city of Leipzig , Germany.
Arthur was the oldest of three brothers , named Kurt and Hermann and were all great strongmen in their own right. The brothers used to put on strongman shows in their garden and train in their parents cellar when only in their teens.Arthur and his brothers worked especially hard on the bent press and was to later be known as the greatest ever in this lift.
At the age of 17 , Arthur became a full time professional strongman, performing in local fairs and carnivals around Germany. After learning the strongman craft and gaining rapidly in strength , Arthur went to England to perform and make his fortune. Arthur joined and lifted with other strongmen in his performances and eventually brought his two younger brothers into the act.
Stating that he lifts over 300 lbs with one hand in every act, Arthur attracted many people who didn't believe his tremendous lifts were genuine and tried to discredit him publicly. One of these was the famous athlete and strongman , Donald Dinnie, who challenged Arthur to come and lift at his place and prove the claims. Arthur went to visit Donald and ended up bent pressing not 300 but 340 lbs , made out of an amalgamation of Dinnies weights!! Donald became one of Arthurs biggest promoters and stated so in the publications of the day. Arthur only weighed about 191 lbs at the time.
Arthur went from strength to strength and eventually lifted in the bent press 371 lbs officially and an incredible 386 lbs in front of credible witnesses !!
These lifts are the highest on record and his two hands anyhow of 448 lbs also remains untouched .
Arthur Saxon performed these and many other super lifts at around 210 lbs or under , and in my eyes earned the title The Iron Master.

I like to welcome Odd Haugen and for those of you who are a little rusty with Norwegian names, here's a pronunciation guide: ode (to Billy Joe) how (do you do) gin (make it rhyme with bin).

Not sure exactly when but probably in the late 1990s, Odd called us because he wanted to get an IronMind pulling harness—I think Odd had been working with Gus Rethwisch and strongman had caught his eye. As you've probably gathered from some of Mike's comments, Odd stands over 7' tall, weighs about 245 kg and consumes at least 3 kg of raw fish and another 3 kg of raw beef a day, but even at about 6' 4" and 300 lb. (with a keen appreciation for sushi), Odd's an imposing figure and while he might be old enough to be your grandfather, he's mighty strong and if you doubt it, come to the San Jose FitExpo this summer and hop in on the IronMind grip contest that is part of the strongman and grip competition extravaganza that Odd is presenting.

Anyway, the first strongman contests I went to were in Scotland and the guys were treated with very basic stuff (so basic, that my wife was concerned that Phil Martin might not be getting enough to eat and she wanted to make him some cheese sandwiches). Odd knocked my socks off because what did he have for the competitors at Beauty & the Beast? Steak and baked potatoes . . . in a sports bar . . . with a Rolling Thunder World Championships as a kickoff event . . . and he latched onto the Apollon's Axle shortly after IronMind introduced it (1994), way before it became a staple of the strongman world.

That's just the beginning—welcome, Odd (Viking, sir)—really good to have you here!
