Thread: Gregg Ernest

    Default Gregg Ernest

Does anyone have any info on big Gregg Ernest? Great competitor from back in the early ninties... Have always wondered about his training routine (although he looks like one of those old fashioned natural farm strong types that presses tractors overhead!) Would also like to know what he's up to now if anybody knows...

I've apparently answered about half of my own question with a little search engine help... It seems Gregg and his family have a singing group... they have a youtube channel that is worth checking out for any music lovers out there... I was really impressed... couple of old vid's of Gregg from the strongman days as well... his record backlift and some footage of him lifting a 500 lbs. field stone like it was nothing... but the other half of the question remains... any info on gregg's training or any other lifts?

You mean Gregg Ernst? I love that guy! His Husafell Stone world record at the 1992 WSM was awesome, no one else came even close. Gotta love the huge mountain man beard too!

I saw Gregg in Nova Scotia 3 years ago. He had a website at the time which might still be working. We talked training for some time and he relayed to me that he trained heavy. When I say heavy I mean near limit powerlifts and heavy loading and carrying. He also did perform back lifts with over 5000 lbs, which is a heavy that really none of us know. As for carrying stones he did that around his farm as a matter of the work he did on a daily basis, so when the moment of truth came at WSM he was ready.

Oddly enough I saw him 3 days after having my bicep repaired after tearing off the tendon on my 3rd trip to Iceland. Fittingly, I tore my bicep with the Husafell Stone and then met Gregg Ernst. He showed me his torn bicep and we had a good laugh.

He is a antique maritime blacksmith and is very renown for his work with restoring old sailing vessels around the world.

Wish I could tell you more, as he is a God gifted strongman and a very unique individual.

Met him a few years back at AOBS, a unique guy for sure..

Looks like he "may" have a Facebook page (I don't do Facebook, so I can't tell if it's him or someone running it for him)

This is the type of man I root for, dude has a regular job and does the strongman stuff on the side. Work, train, compete and then back to your life until the next time. Very cool.

Yeah, Thomas, I just realized I mispelled the name... seems like a very cool and talented guy... seems to be very dedicated to his faith; have to respect that... insanely strong... been re-watching the 92 final... walked with the Husafell like it was a pebble...

    Default AOBS/Iron Game History

Seems like a nice guy and working hard on his music.

I enjoyed having a chance to chat with Greg at the 2009 AOBS dinner because I'd been wanting to ask him whether he'd really written the letter to the editor bashing Paul Anderson's backlifts that appeared in Iron Game History.
