Dinie Stones

By the time you visit there will be a little change to the stones. Last month I visited Potarch with David Webster who has kindly donated a substantial quantity of interlocking rubber tiles which are about four to six inches in thickness and the stones will be placed on them soon. This will certainly help preserve the stones and prevent any weight loss due to continual friction on the ground but I am more than sure this may be an advantage to those who desire to "rep" them.......watch this space as arguments will flow as a result.


Just as Dinnie sideline.....there is/was a stone that Dinnie lifted just over the hils in Glen Esk. Robert Dinnie built a lovely church in the Glen and Dinnie frequently practiced with a "lump of granite" which was pointed out in 1982. I have tried to find it but unfortunately, those that know its whereabouts are not prepared to say for some strange reason and this is sad.....but it will be found someday. In Royal Deeside there is still a traditional lifting stone in Glentanner but nobody can recall its exact whereabouts similarly, in Glen Lui there is the Clach Togalaich Glen Lui which is still there. In the Cromar (between the Rivers Dee and Don) area there is another two lifting stones and just south of Braemar in Caenlochan there are a further two. North of Cromar is Nairnshire where the Barevan stone is situated.....it has a lifting history far older than that of the Inver Stone and is 5 lbs lighter.


Paul, I have passed by the Nicol stones so many times and I keep saying to myself that I should have popped in. I hope to be back up in Deeside in the next few months as there is a lot of stone finding to do.


I would stress that as everyone is hell bent on a pilgrimage to Deeside they should seriously consider the North Uist stones as not only are the stone heavier but the local people know everything about them and can recite story upon story of a strength culture that still remains.

PS Brandon, Sorry I couldn't help with the stone dimensions but the offer for a tour guide is still there.

thanks Peter for the information. hopefully ill be there before years end. i would love a tour. last time i was in Scotland, i was amazed by the ruggedness and beauty of the country. it would be great to tour with someone who "kows stones"

Thats interesting, i watched the video of my dinnie lifts this week and noticed how far we dragged the stones to find a firm base, that would certainly keep the stones better

i noticed on my lifts a couple of years ago too that the handles where getting a little thin round the base of tha handle



just up the road from the dinies are a couple of similar stones 3 in all namned after their owner the Nichols stones, brett did say that he would be making them available for lifting, as i havent been up there since i dont know if he actually did place them at the front of his house for people to attempt them the 2 heavier stones totalled more than the dinnies

height of Dinnie stones

do you are anyone know the height from the gorund to the two different handles on the Dinnie stones. im hoping to go lift them within the year?

Just as a matter of information for all who are interested, Che the owner of the Potarch Hotel expressed some concern about the weight of the Dinnies deminishing over the years. To preserve the stones for all, a small section of the front of the Hotel will be laid with shock absorbant rubber. The ambience of the setting will in no way effected and this step will ensure that the stones will be preserved for years to come.


For posterity, I also hope to have the stones 3D laser scanned some time next year .
