  • Lifting for Grappling sports such as Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Judo, etc

    Hello all,
I posted in the "Other" sub-forum inquiring about what kind of things people had done for strength in grappling sports. I figured this sub-forum would be a good place for the question as well. What kind of programs have some of the resident grapplers on the forum used with success? What type of training do you guys think would be applicable to grapplers? Any particular implements, exercises, rep ranges seem to work well? Thank you for your time and responses.

Grapplers, like all athletes, need strong backs & legs. However, one important area for grapplers to prioritize is grip & forearm strength as the nature of the sport requires you to not only grab an opponent, but manipulate them via that grip. It does no good to have the strength to maneuver an opponent if they can twist away from the grip. Therefore, it is the grip that is the key to transfer most force.

Agreed. A strong grip can make up for lack of technique. I can often grab hold of a gi and stall because the other guy is unable to break my grip.
